Oculoplasty Services

Oculoplasty deals with the management of deformities and abnormalities of the of the periocular area, which includes the eyelids, eyebrows, eye socket/orbit and tear duct/lacrimal system. A wide variety of surgical procedures are conducted by the surgeon for improving the function, comfort and appearance of the eye sockets (orbits), eyelids, tear ducts and the area around the eyes. Reconstruction of the eye and associated structure are also performed in Oculoplasty.

Conditions Treated

Oculoplastic Procedures are performed for treating various eye complications.

Problems of the Eyelid: When the age starts increasing, people might notice various eye problems. One of the most common is the development of droopy eyelids. Excess skin and fat gets deposited on the upper eyelids thus impairing the vision. The Ophthalmologist would suggest you eye surgery after analyzing the severity of the condition.

Tear Drainage: Some people complain of watery eye. In the normal course, the tears drain from the eye surface through the eyelids and into the nose. If this drainage system is locked, the tears appear on the cheek. To cure such condition Oculoplasty is done in which a new pathway for the tears to drain into nose is created.

Skin Cancers of the Eyelid: People who have too much sun exposure or who have fair skin are at higher risk for developing skin cancer. Eyelids and face are the most common locations for developing skin cancer. Consult an Ophthalmologist who would conduct a surgery called DCR ( Dacryocsytorhinostomy) to cure the condition.

Eye Orbital (eye socket): The eye orbital contains those muscles which enable the movement of the eyes and bones. Sometimes the eye socket might get affected due to injury, inflammation or some other reason. In such a case the ophthalmologist would advise you to go for A MRI scan or CT scan to know the exact problem and the exact location. Some people suffering from Graves’ disease suffer from problems of the eye socket. So for such patients the ophthalmologist would go ahead with a surgery.

Eye Loss: an eye loss is a very big jolt for a person. The oculoplastic surgeon would assist in removing the injured eye and then placing a prosthetic eye in place effectively.

Types of Oculoplasty

Brow Lifts: Patient with heaviness above their eyes may have deflated or sagging eyebrows. Surgery to lift the brow can be performed to help elevate the brow tissue. This is sometimes combined with upper eyelid lifting (blepharoplasty) surgery to obtain the best result.

Droopy Eyelids(Ptosis): Individuals who have “droopy” eyelids have a condition called “Ptosis” (pronounced”toesis”). This occurs when the tiny muscle that lifts the eyelid becomes weak or slack, causing the upper eyelid to hang too low over the eye. People can be born with ptosis or acquire it later in life. It typically impairs vision. In order to see better, people with ptosis sometimes lean their head back, raise their eyebrows or physically lift the lid with their finger.

Excessive Tearing: Eyes that continually water may be making too many tears or can have damage to the lacrimal drainage system, the part of the eye that is responsible for collecting and draining tears. Normally, our eyes have a Vaseline level of moisture and tear when we cry or when we are exposed to certain smells (like onions) or irritations (like wind & allergies). However, the ducts that make up the lacrimal drainage system can sometimes become blocked. This may be caused by an injury, infection or most commonly in females, aging.

Bulging Eyes (Exophthalmos): When an abnormal amount of the eye “white” is exposed, it may be because the eyeball is pushed forward. When this happens, the cause is often a swelling or growth that occurs behind the eye. The eye may feel dry and the patient may have difficulty seeing and may have double vision or blurriness. The eyelid may not close properly. The most common cause of bulging eyes is Graves’ disease, a type of hyperthyroidism (which is an overactive thyroid gland). Other causes may be eye tumors or an eye infection. Other people simply have shallow eye sockets as their normal appearance.

Wrinkles: As skin ages, it becomes thinner and less elastic. Though wrinkling is considered a natural part of aging, certain habits like excessive sun exposure and smoking contribute to premature wrinkling of the skin. A variety of treatments like skin care products, Botulinum toxin, filler injections and both non-ablative and ablative skin treatment can help improve the appearance of wrinkles.

Skin Cancer Reconstruction: Skin cancer is a common problem and often affects the eyelids. Several different kinds of cancer exist, but Basal Cell Carcinoma is far and away the most common. This cancer thankfully grows slowly and rarely spreads distant sights. Excision of the cancer often combined with reconstruction is needed to treat the lesion and obtain a cure.
